About The Reeks District Special Area of Conservation

The Reeks District Special Area of Conservation (SAC) encompasses the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountain range, located in County Kerry, Ireland. This region is home to Carrauntoohil, Ireland’s highest peak at 1,038 meters (3,406 feet). The landscape is characterized by steep rocky ridges, deep corrie lakes, high-altitude blanket bogs, and varied calcareous grasslands that support a wide array of rare plant communities, including alpine and sub-alpine flora. The area is ecologically significant due to its heathlands and upland habitats that harbor important species such as the Irish hare, peregrine falcon, and several rare mosses and lichens. Historically, the Reeks have long been a focus for outdoor enthusiasts, climbers, and hillwalkers, with well-established routes such as the Reeks Ridge Walk offering challenging and scenic experiences. The rugged terrain provides a dramatic setting for mountaineering and rock climbing, while the natural habitats draw birdwatchers and botanists keen on studying sensitive upland ecosystems. The SAC designation helps conserve vital habitats threatened by overgrazing, invasive species, and recreational pressure, balancing conservation objectives with sustainable outdoor recreation. Accessed primarily via the village of Glencar and the town of Killarney, the Reeks District SAC is a magnet for adventure-seekers and nature lovers, especially during late spring to early autumn, when weather conditions are most favorable. The combination of cultural heritage, stunning geological features, and ecological importance make this area a treasured conservation and recreation destination in Ireland.
